A couple of nights in Basel, Switzerland in December offers a lot of Christmas cheer in this lovely, artistic little city.
Some great things to see, eat, and do:
- Check out the Christmas markets at Münsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz
- Wander around Altstadt Grossbasel, part of the old town, and see the lovely old buildings and winding streets
- Climb the Basler Münster cathedral tower for an exciting and exhilarating view of the city https://www.baslermuenster.ch/infos-kontakt/besuche-und-fuehrungen/turmbesteigung
- Take a run or walk north up the Rhine River and traverse France, Switzerland, and Germany all in one go
- Look in at the Rathaus – the City Hall in Marktplatz with many colorful wall frescoes https://www.basel.com/en/attractions/marktplatz-677bd677e0
- Check out the many museums – this is something we missed out on, as tickets need to be bought in advance, but since Basel is home to nearly 40 well-respected museums, its worthwhile to look for one or two that interest you
- Eat some Swiss food, maybe fondue? Prepare your wallet in advance
- Buy some Swiss chocolate, even if its just at the grocery store
- Try out some of the many great bakeries, and at Christmas definitely opt for a pastry shaped like a sugary person and a hot chocolate. Gilgen is a famous one https://gilgenag.ch/wp/
