This is a throw back to years (7 years!!!) ago in 2017 when we visited Charleston for our first and thus far, only time. But its rainy and cold here in Denmark so a lovely chance to look back on it and reminisce.

Carriage Rides

Taking a carriage ride on a hot august day in South Carolina? A little horsey, but a good activity for young and old, and a way for us to see the Charleston’s historic downtown district and learn a bit about the history without a ton of walking.

Around Town

One really interesting place to stop and shop is Charleston City Market, where a lot of local wares are sold. In particular, sweetgrass baskets. These baskets have been a part of Lowcountry culture for over 300 years, and are traced back to West Africa, having been brought to America by enslaved people who were keeping their culture and traditions alive. The baskets were used in daily work and to hold household goods.

During the second half of the 20th century, sweetgrass artistry garnered international recognition as the artists began to win awards. Now, you can buy the handmade baskets here, or travel a short distance to the Sweetgrass Basket Pavilion in Mount Pleasant, where local basket makers do demonstrations.

Poogan’s Porch in Charleston is not only a great restaurant, but it also supposedly haunted, by both a human ghost and a dog ghost! So natuarally, we ate there and kept a lookout for ghosts but alas, saw none.

Beach

Of course you can’t go to Charleston and miss the beach (at least we can’t). Plus what a sunset.

We stayed up on the Isle of Palms Wild Dunes Resort and it was simply beautiful. A true beach retreat and still close enough to easily get to and from Charleston.

Capers Island Beach

This place was like an alien landscape and so fun to explore. Desolate but really appealing, we spent a lot of time wandering around here.
