A week in Lisbon means you can cover a lot of ground, even when there are 8 of you. We stayed in the same place for the entire vacation, and took day trips to Cascais, Pena Palace and Sintra, and around Lisbon. This worked out well, not having to move 2 families around and being close to good restaurants, an international doctor office (which we used!), and public transportation.

Some of our big-kid-friendly activities:

  • The Tile Museum, which was so beautiful, I’d go again and again
  • Art exploration at the LX factory
  • A nighttime light show at Carmo Convent
  • Beach day in Cascais
  • Exploring Pena Palace and the gardens around it
  • Climbing around the Moorish Castle
  • Castelo de São Jorge and a very friendly peacock
  • Museu da Agua aqueduct walk – our second time doing this, and again really fun
  • Finding cool art around the city
  • Food and drinks: trying ginjinha cherry liquor at Ginjinha Sem Rival (grown-ups only), eating so many pastéis de nata (we loved Manteigaria), exploring The Fantastic World of the Portuguese Sardine shop, enjoying an amazing meal at A Cozinha (also just the adults), and trying the most expensive ports and wines by the tasting glass at Napoleao
  • Riding the trams (of course)

What a gorgeous place – like a secret oasis in the city. Serene, quiet, and wonderful light. Everyone loved it here.
